When increasing speed, we reduce labor costs, turnaround time and increase profit. In passenger transportation, the most efficient are high-speed railways (HSR, or <italic>высокоскоростные</italic><italic> магистрали</italic> in Russian). Over the past 60 years, the high-speed railway network has been actively developing in various countries of the world, allowing to analyze statistics on their construction and operation.</p> <p><bold>AIM. </bold>To identify the patterns of high-speed railway development that will allow optimizing high-speed transportation solutions both during the construction of the first Russian HSR (St. Petersburg–Moscow) and further development of the HSR network in Russia.</p> <p><bold>MATERIALS AND METHODS.</bold> Statistics of the International Union of Railways (UIC); statistics of national railway companies. Mathematical methods include least square method, covariance method, and Pearson correlation analysis.</p> <p><bold>RESULTS.</bold> A mathematical description of HSR expansion was developed based on a case study of Japan.</p> <p><bold>CONCLUSION. </bold>The study may be used to assess the global development of HSRs.</p></abstract><trans-abstract xml:lang="ru"><p><bold>Обоснование.</bold> Одним из основных путей повышения эффективности работы железнодорожного транспорта является повышение скорости движения. При увеличении скорости сокращаются расходы на оплату труда персонала, уменьшается время оборота, за счет чего растут доходы. В области пассажирских перевозок наибольшую эффективность имеют высокоскоростные железные дороги, которые в России принято называть высокоскоростные магистрали (ВСМ). В последние 60 лет сеть ВСМ активно развивается в различных странах мира, что позволяет анализировать статистические данные об их строительстве и эксплуатации.</p> <p><bold>Цель. </bold>Выявить закономерности развития ВСМ, которые позволят оптимизировать технические решения в области высокоскоростного движения как при сооружении первой в России ВСМ Санкт-Петербург – Москва, а также при дальнейшем развитии сети ВСМ в России.</p> <p><bold>Материалы и методы.</bold> Статистика Международного союза железных дорог (МСЖД), Статистика национальных железнодорожных компаний.
